The metamorphosis and the role of understanding (2018)

Info +
This compound narrative consists of The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and eight short stories experienced by various people. One of the main themes in The Metamorphosis is empathy. Gregor Samsa, the main character, was a devoted person who cared for the people around him, particularly his family. Even before his transformation, the family already showed a lack of empathy for him. After Gregor’s metamorphosis, his family members struggled with feelings of both sympathy and revulsion toward him. The increasing gap between Gregor and his family is reflected through the lay-out of the book and his transformation is displayed on the cover. The short stories are adding information to the original narrative. One of the stories is simply about a compliment, while another story is about an experiment based on practicing pain on others. The purpose of the stories is to show insights on empathy to the reader from various aspects.
